India’s Seafood Exports, FY 2025–26
What the Data Says About
India’s Seafood Trade
Figures from MPEDA and ICAR-CMFRI, with sources listed at the end of this page.
A record export year
India exported 19,72,018 tonnes of seafood worth ₹73,890.46 crore (US$8.46 billion) in 2025–26, the highest ever by volume and value. Frozen shrimp made up 66.52% of dollar earnings.
Market concentration is shifting
The United States stayed the largest buyer by value (US$2.33 billion), yet exports to it fell 14.22% in dollar terms and 19.51% in volume. Visibility in more than one market has become a practical concern.
Beyond shrimp
Frozen cuttlefish exports reached 67,157 tonnes worth US$331.96 million, up 16.25% in dollar value, and dried products rose 78.05% in rupee value. Species and product pages should reflect your real range.
Karnataka’s supply swings
Karnataka’s marine landings rose 44% in 2025 after a 34% fall in 2024. Seasonality and supply stability are part of what buyers want explained clearly.
The Mangaluru–Udupi Harbour Belt
Mangaluru Fishing Harbour in Dakshina Kannada and Malpe Fishing Harbour in Udupi district are among Karnataka’s principal landing centres. The Government of India’s December 2024 reply to the Lok Sabha lists sanctioned modernisation projects under the PMMSY scheme for both harbours (project costs of ₹37.47 crore and ₹12.52 crore) and a new fishing harbour at Kulai near New Mangalore Port. Infrastructure is improving; buyers abroad still judge a supplier first by what they can verify online.
What International Buyers Notice —
and Where Suppliers Lose Ground
Importers often research suppliers through trade-show catalogues, directories and web search before asking for a quote. Where your presence is thin, inconsistent or hard to verify, shortlists can form without you.
Hard to find in product searches
Buyers search by product, species, pack format and origin. Without dedicated, specification-rich pages for each, your company is unlikely to appear for those searches.
Specifications buried in PDFs
Scanned brochures cannot be indexed, translated or cited by search engines and AI assistants. Buyers want structured data: species, size grades, glazing, pack sizes, shelf life and minimum order.
Certifications that are hard to verify
Logos without certificate numbers, issuing bodies and validity dates raise doubts. Clear, current and verifiable approvals build confidence.
Inconsistent company information
Different descriptions, addresses or product lists across your website, directories, marketplaces and LinkedIn confuse buyers and AI assistants alike.
Trade-show contacts that go cold
A conversation in Barcelona or Boston needs structured follow-up within days. Without lead capture and a follow-up process, contacts fade.
No traceability story
Retail and foodservice buyers often ask where fish was caught or farmed and how it was handled. An honest account of sourcing and cold chain sets suppliers apart.

Export Requirements at a Glance
What the regulators say, and what it means for how you present your company online.
| Market | Authority or standard | What it means for your website and content |
|---|---|---|
| European Union | Export Inspection Council (EIC) approves EU establishments; EIC and Export Inspection Agencies (EIAs) issue health certificates. | Each consignment needs a numbered original health certificate issued before shipment, never retrospectively. Approval requires a HACCP manual and MPEDA registration, among other documents. Publish only the approval status you actually hold. |
| United States | FDA seafood HACCP (21 CFR 123); NOAA Fisheries under the Marine Mammal Protection Act (MMPA). | MMPA import provisions took effect on 1 January 2026. Imports from fisheries denied comparability findings are prohibited. Determinations are made country by country and fishery by fishery, and generally run to 31 December 2029. |
| Other markets | MPEDA publishes market-specific requirements; EIAs approve non-EU establishments. | Requirements differ by destination. Build market pages only for markets you genuinely serve. |
| Tariffs and trade policy | Importing countries. | Duties and trade rules change often. Keep them off marketing pages and confirm them with your customs adviser or freight forwarder. |
